What is it?

Tobacco contains the stimulant drug Nicotine.

Effects

Effects start quickly + last for approx. 30 mins.
Users say it helps them to concentrate/relax.
Supresses the appetite.

Withdrawal includes irritability, restlessness, + depression.

Risks

Coughs, chest/breathing problems.

Lung cancer.

Heart disease.

Circulatory problems.

Bronchitis.

Smoking during pregnancy can damage the unborn child.

Passive smoking i.e. breathing in other people’s smoke is damaging to health.

Deaths. Approx. 120,000 per year in Britain. The biggest killer.
Smoking causes dependence and a strong compulsion to carry on.

Some things to think about

Why, when tobacco smoking kills approx. 100,000 people per year + cost the NHS lots of money, is smoking socially acceptable?

Tobacco companies are targetting China + the Third World countries, as new ‘growth areas’.

Many of the Marlboro men in the adverts have died as a result of smoking cigarettes.

It is not illegal to smoke, but it is illegal to sell cigarettes to under 16′s.
